19 Public Events Hosted by AIA Wyoming Sponsored by Wyoming Board of Architects and Landscape Architects BY MIKE POTTER, AIA A IAWyoming, in partnership with the Wyoming State Board of Architects & Landscape Architects, hosted three public events during our three conferences. These events provided the general public an opportunity to meet with architects in various locations around the state and to hear and see a diverse look at what architecture and archi- tects do for their communities, the environment and the overall health of mankind. Dr. Richard Jackson, MD - MPH - Hon AIA started off the year in Cheyenne with the program "Designing Healthy & Sustainable Communities". This presentation focused on how architecture influences the health of those who live in the built environment, both positively and negatively. His presentation was followed by a panel discussion withMary Ann Lazarus, FAIA, Brian Dunbar LEED Fellow and Jeremiah Eck, FAIA and questions from the audience. Next we went to Evanston for a showing the documentary " Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio". The film reveals that the Rural Studio is about more than just architecture and building. Mockbee's program provides students with an experience that forever inspires them to consider how they can use their skills to better their communities. It also opened the larger discussion of the architect's role in issues of poverty, class, race, education, social change and citizenship. Prior to the filmwas a tour of the newly renovated StrandTheater. Casper was the setting for "Art and Architecture" featuring TodWilliams, of TodWilliams Billie Tsien Architects. It featured a presentation of his firm's work around the world, emphasizing his philosophy "to leave good marks on the earth. A tour of the Music Building on the campus of Casper College followed. The purpose of these public events is to provide an environment for educating the public on what architects do, provide an opportunity for the general public to meet and mingle with us and educate the public on the importance of health, safety and welfare in all we do. A special thank you goes out to the State Board of Architects & Landscape Architects for sponsoring these events. Without their generosity, AIA Wyoming would not be able to host them. We look forward to being able to continue this forum for the education of the public on the importance of architects in their daily lives. b
