23 T heWyoming School Facilities Commission (SFC) is administered through theWyoming School Facilities Department (SFD). Established in 2002, the SFCwas created to ensure adequate and equitable K-12 edu- cational facilities throughout Wyoming. The SFC consists of seven voting members who are appointed by the sitting governor and approved by the Legislature. In addition to the voting members, the state superintendent of public instruction serves in an ex officio non-voting capacity. We work with the SFD to assist all 48 school districts inWyoming in the planning, assessing, financing, construction, andmaintenance of school buildings. As demographic conditions fluctuate, and as available funds change, school district needs will change. Along with each school district, the SFD manages approximately 1,600 separate buildings consisting of about 25 million square feet inWyoming, the majority of which are educational facilities. Since 2002, Wyoming has investedmore than 3.5 billion dollars in the repair and replacement of K-12 public schools. Through funding, preventative maintenance, major repair, and replacement, the planning strategy of asset preservation is a major goal of the SFC into the future. The SFCmeets once every other month, and is open to the public. We recently met in Casper, and enjoyed a field trip of new school construction hosted by the Natrona County School District.
