13 Education & Resources Committee Providing Knowledge Opportunities BY CLINT TAYLOR, AIA, CHAIR Members of the Education and Resources Committee: Clint Taylor, AIA, Chair Brandon Diagle, AIA Chris Mowen, Associate AIA Cornelius Kinsey, AIA Dan Stalker, AIA Doug Selby, AIA Jo Haley, Assoc. AIA I n order to fulfill the committee’s mission to “provide resources regard- ing architectural services and education of the architectural profession available to students, AIA Wyoming members and the public,” the Education and Resources Committee completed a series of educational box-programs for AIA members for use at career days or other public functions to promote the profession. The programs are available on the AIA Wyoming website. We welcome input from members who use these materials, as we plan to continually improve these resources. Colleen Nelson, AIA presented the material at Women in Science in Riverton this summer. Cornelius Kinsey, AIA, led a project where we partnered with Wyo- ming PBS to create a documentary called “Architecture in the Tetons” that highlighted architecturally significant buildings in the state. Main Street Wyoming aired on Wyoming PBS on April 17 and explored two impactful architectural projects in the Tetons. Mies van der Roh’s unbuilt Dining Pavilion on the Snake River Ranch was instrumental in bringing the architect to the United States. Gilbert Stanley Underwood’s Jackson Lake Lodge in Teton National Park was the last great rustic lodge that the National Parks Service built. Underwood and van der Roh brought bold ideas of modernism and International Style architecture to Wyoming and changed the way people considered the relationship between architecture and the environment. The Education and Resources Committee hopes to continue this video series with the state’s only Frank Lloyd Wright building, a Usonian house near Cody. The Committee created a YouTube channel and uploaded our first videos to it. Brandon Daigle’s interview of Bruce Hawtin, FAIA was our first YouTube video. Recordings of Tod Williams’ FAIA presentations at the 2015 Annual Fall Conference in Casper were also uploaded. We are currently editing videos of the speakers at the 2016 Summer Conference in Sheridan and plan to have those uploaded. A presentation was given at the Emerging Professionals’ event at the Annual Fall Conference in Jackson. The presentation included an update on the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), the program formerly known as the Intern Development Program (IDP), and the transition to the Architectural Registration Exams (ARE) 5.0. Interns interested in be- coming licensed, or anyone currently pursuing their license, are encour- aged to contact the state Architect Licensing Advisor, Brandon Daigle, AIA with any questions at bdaigle@rvbcasper.com or Clint Taylor, AIA at clint@tdsi.us For more information about AXP and the ARE visit the following web- sites: www.ncarb.org, www.aia-wyoming.org, www.aia.org, www.epcom- panion.org. Continuing Education Credits (AIA/CES) are offered at the three annual conferences put on by AIA Wyoming in the fall, winter and summer. The state Continuing Education Credit coordinator is Jo Haley, Associate AIA. She has been coordinating and processing speaker cre- dential forms, continuing education credit forms, and any other inquiries for AIA Wyoming members for years. Her commitment to providing the necessary continuing education credits for AIA Wyoming members has been a great asset to the Committee. For inquiries on the current status of your continuing education credits visit www.aia.org . For more infor- mation about continuing education opportunities with AIA Wyoming, visit www.aia-wyoming.org . b The Commercial Construction Committee met June 21 in Rock Springs which Charlie Van Over, AIA of the Government Advocacy Committee was in attendance. Since learning of the Commercial Construction Committee in May, Charlie has attended both of their meetings, one in Rock Springs on June 21 and the other in Casper on August 30. Lyle Murtha, AIA and Chet Lockard, AIA also attended the meeting in Casper. These meetings have been very interesting to say the least with a mixed list of topics for discussion. The most interesting is Del McOmie the new Director of the State Construction Department which includes the SFD and A&I and his vision of how the two departments will function as one. There is a lot to do there but it sounds like A&I will operate more like the SFD in the future. Mr. McOmie does frequently mention how things were done at WYDOT in his discussions. AIA Wyoming will continue to stay involved and report to the membership regularly. The Commercial Construction Committee has established three sub committees at this point. Project Closeout, Contracts/State Statutes, and Value Engineering. Our under- standing of these committees is to develop rules, standards, and process for the entire committee to consider. Charlie is signed up to be on the Project Closeout and Value Engineering committees, and Lyle has signed up for the Value Engineering committee. We would strongly suggest that other AIA Wyoming Architect members get involved in these commit- tees. We currently have no representation of the Contracts/State Statutes Committee. If you would like to be involved in any of the committees, please contact Charlie Van Over. We will continue to attend these meetings and monitor the situation. Anyone who has questions or who would like additional information, please feel free to contact Charlie Van Over or any other Government Advocacy Committee member. This committee is open to any AIA Wy- oming member having a topic they would like the committee to discuss and research for its effect on all of us as members of the AIA Wyoming or the AIA National organization. b
