16 WYOMING ARCHITECTURE .16 | www.aia-wyoming.org T he 2016 AIANational Convention brought thousands of architects and design professionals to Philadel- phia onMay 18-21 for one of our best, most inspiring, andmost impactful events yet. The theme, IMAGINE +, kicked off with the keynote address by actress, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, as she was interviewed live by Terry Gross, the host the National Public Radio show, Fresh Air. She shared how she and her husband are working with their architect on a unique design of their home to adapt to the changes in their family while being sensitive to their values. The Day 2 keynote address was given by award winning architect, designer, and MIT professor, Neri Oxman. Her research radically rethinks everyday designs and systems and explores the relationship between nature and the built environment. The inspiring presentation demonstrated why she was named to ICON’s list of top 20 most influential architects to shape our future. On Day 3 the Pritzker Prize winner, architect, and educator, MohsenMostafavi, was joined by renowned architect Rem Koolhaas, to discuss rethinking, reimag- ining, revising plans for the world’s future. Koolhaas has been reimagining our cities since 1978’s publication of Delirious New York, a manifesto onmodern urban design that was instantly hailed as a classic text. AndMostafavi, whose prolific career has been inspiring, exploring, and evaluating bold urban architecture for more than three decades. In addition to the entertaining keynote address during the general sessions we heard directly from the candidates running for officer positions on the National Board of Directors. In other business, we were informed by AIA’s EVP/CEO, Robert Ivy, FAIA, about the newwebsite, survey responses, and the work of committees. AIA Treasurer, Stuart Coppedge, AIA, reported that the operations have been in conformance with net assets vs. reserves policy for the fourth year in a row. The 2016 President of AIA, Russ Davidson, FAIA, talked about the connections between local AIA Boards and Regional and National Boards, about changes at the convention to come in 2-3 years with special initiatives, and ways to move professional development forward. President Davidson also gave an update on the AIA advertising campaign, and explained how public outreach and government advocacy canmake a difference by elevating the importance of social infrastructure on public build- ings while bringing resilience to the organization with institutional sustainabil- ity. The host chapter Party transformed the convention center’s Grand Ballroom into an exclusive venue on Friday evening for an unforgettable night of music, socializing with friends, and some of Philly’s best food and drink. The crowd was entertained by the band, The Bacon Brothers, lead by actor Kevin Bacon and Emmy award-winning composer Michael Bacon before they kick off their summer tour. The convention concluded with the business meeting where announcements were made of the results of the AIA Board elections with 188 out of 238 AIA Chapters represented. Many amendments and resolutions were voted on. AIA Wyoming participated in all voting procedures. The Tobaz Medallion award recipient went to Douglas Kelbaugh, FAIA Emeritus for his work combining practice and education around sustainable design. The 2016 AIAGoldMedal recipients were Robert Venturi, FAIA and Denise Scott Brown, Hon. FAIA for their 55 years of collaboration that has deeply affected the profession, in the USA and whole world.
