26 WYOMING ARCHITECTURE .17 | www.aia-wyoming.org AIA Wyoming Summer Conference BY LYLE T. MURTHA , AIA O n June 23rd and 24th, 2017 the AIA Wyoming Summer Con- ference was held in Casper. Members of local Casper firms combined to form the conference planning team to feature a conference themed around the topics of shipping container architecture and tiny houses along with tours of several unique local projects recently completed and under construction. The conference provided opportu- nities to learn, enhance and creatively explore thinking outside the box through the presentations from innovative regional architects who have been leaders in these areas within professions. The event was hosted at the Lyric in the Old Yellowstone District, and provided a central location within walking distance of all of the first day events. Over a dozen sponsors supported the conference, includ- ing several who exhibited their product information. Thank you to our conference planning team who included Lyle Murtha, AIA, David Little, Assoc. AIA, Randy Hein, AIA, Brandon Daigle, AIA, Nick Zimmerman, Assoc. AIA, Jacob Ernst, Assoc. AIA and Susan Menghini. The conference kicked off on Friday morning with one of two keynote speakers, Peter DeMaria, AIA of DeMaria Design, LLC and Logical Homes, who delivered an inspiring and thought-provoking discussion on the firms compelling body of work with shipping containers with feature projects from around the country. A conference bonus included local artist and interior designer, Shawn Rivett, providing a real-life peak at a tiny home that he’s been designing in conjunction with the Wyoming Department of Tourism at his studio that will be shown on hgtv.com/ calloftheWY, which was a segue into the second keynote speaker, Geof- frey Warner, AIA of Alchemy Architects of St. Paul, Minnesota. Geoffrey continued the discussion of wee houses (also known as tiny homes) prefabrication system and focus on combining barn tech with high tech with example projects from across the country that create a harmonious blend of site, building and the community. The conference continued with a lunch presentation by Freddie Guynn of Polished Concrete of Wyoming identifying the pitfalls to avoid in polished concrete floor applications. After lunch, a joint presentation by Lyle Murtha, AIA, and Matt Fridell, ASLA discussed the events-driven downtown plaza, David Street Station project, along with an on-site tour of the project, which located Geoffrey Warner, AIA Matt Fridell, ASLA Peter DeMaria, AIA Lyle Murtha, AIA
