28 WYOMING ARCHITECTURE .17 | www.aia-wyoming.org AIA Wyoming Annual Fall Conference BY DAN STALKER, AIA A IA Wyoming architects are currently celebrating our 70th An- niversary as a Chapter of the AIA. We held continuing educa- tion conferences in Cheyenne and in Casper and most recently traveled to Jackson Hole to honor the history of our component. We were able to celebrate AIA Wyoming’s history, recognize significant events as well as anticipate our future. Our continuing education conferences are scheduled to primarily offer HSW credits to our members. Attending two of the three conferences will result in satisfying all HSW requirements for AIA membership state licen- sure. We do this by creating enticing programs that feature a blending of design and technically related issues and speakers. The conference in Jackson, however, was unique from any perspective. Our Executive Director, Ms. Susan Menghini, initiated a discussion with the National Board almost two years ago. Due to Susan’s gentle prompting, the National Board elected to schedule an annual meeting in the spectacular setting of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The collaborative conference allowed for AIAWyoming architects to meet and socialize with the AIA National Board and staff for two days. Our 2017 AIA National President Tom Voni- er, FAIA and CEO/EVP Robert Ivy, FAIA made time to make presentations to our members, highlighting national events and initiatives. WMR Senior and Junior Directors Tania Salgado, AIA and Patrick Panet- ta, AIA along with Secretary Katie Wilson, AIA and Associate Director Nate Hudson, Associate AIA from our regional board helped describe the principles of the WMR and the activities and programs it provides for us. The WMR is not fully understood by our members and the discussion was helpful for those attending the conference. NCARB representative Martin Smith traveled to Jackson to provide an update to our members of issues relating to licensure and reciprocity. Wyoming’s Governor Matt Mead and Secretary of State Ed Murray gave opening remarks to the membership. With a generous funding contribution from the Wyoming Board of Architects and Landscape Ar- chitects, we were able to celebrate architecture and our anniversary year Will Bruder, FAIA Stephen Dynia, FAIA Ed Vance, FAIA Charles Keyes, PE, SE Virginia Marquardt, AIA Stuart Coppedge, AIA Wendell Burnette, FAIA with the general public. Will Bruder, FAIA and our own Stephen Dynia, FAIA were featured for a well-attended Public Event. The Jackson meeting also celebrated our every third year Design and Honor Awards program where 12 significant designs were recognized and four Honor Awards bestowed. The quality of the designs offered for consideration were remarkable and all Design and Honor award recipi- ents were deserving. Prior to the Jackson Conference, the AIA Wyoming Board of Directors met with the Wyoming Board of Architects and Landscape Architects to discuss educational activities as well a planning session focused on shared opportunities for 2018. AIA Wyoming is proud to report that our Board and four standing committees are active, ambitious, optimistic and responsive. Although we continually seek volunteers to offer perspective, our core group of and 70th Anniversary Celebration
