This flagship project is significant on a local, national, and indeed, global scale. In 2010 the Town of Jackson, Wyoming released a RFP to find a creative solution for an infill lot adjacent to the town’s parking garage. Six years later, through a public-private partnership with the Town of Jackson, Vertical Harvest of Jackson Hole stands three stories high. By going ‘vertical’, the greenhouse utilizes a 1/10 of an acre to grow an annual amount of produce equivalent to 5 acres of traditional agriculture. Vertical Harvest will sell 100,000 lbs of locally grown produce to Jackson restaurants, grocery stores and residents via an on-site market 365 days a year. As a milestone project in urban agriculture, it is providing a local solution to the area’s short growing season and high demand for imported fresh foods. As a milestone in innovative workplaces, Vertical Harvest is providing an answer to the employment needs of an underserved portion of the Wyoming population, dedicating its resources to providing citizens with disabilities a meaningful, consistent employment. As an example of innovative urban renewal, the Vertical Harvest greenhouse is building on a remnant infill lot, making use of land that is typically seen as unusable as well as remaining publicly owned. On this small footprint Vertical Harvest is providing a sustainable and decentralized green solution to food production within an urban context. The building’s architecture is modular and both the building and its greater concepts can be replicated on any sized foot- print as part of an urban renewal and food produc- tion response to the growing needs of our cities. The greenhouse was conceptualized, designed and constructed by a team of local architects, European manufacturers and greenhouse experts to assure the highest level of functionality and design. The glass building utilizes the southern exposure to both heat the building and grow the plants within. The rotating growing systems in the greenhouse span the three story façade to maximize the area for growth and to keep energy usage at a minimum. This system is just one example of how Vertical Harvest is innovating in the relationship between technology and architecture to attain both functional and social goals. Vertical Harvest Nona Yehia, Gyde Architects, PC Award of Citation Location: Jackson, WY Size: 7,750 sq ft Category: Residential Ski House Peggy Gilday, AIA Award of Merit This modern, slope-side chalet is dramatically sited within a densely forested site at a world-class ski resort. The clean, linear form spans a roaring creek that flows through the severely contoured site, and serves as an expression of the personality and intentions of the client. A limited material palette: black zinc, clear oak, and concrete reinforces the crispness of the building form, and creates an intriguing juxtaposition against the lush landscape. The house refer- ences geological formations found in nature, and acts as a powerful backdrop to the changing seasons. The warm, neutral interior expands and contracts to engage the expansive views of the surrounding landscape as the pro- gram changes. At the center of the house, a two story volume dramatically opens up in two directions through floor to ceil- ing windows and contains the primary entertaining spaces. A cable stair to a catwalk above services the private quarters on the second level, and appears to flow through the exterior tree canopy. The design of this unique hideaway redefines traditional ski-in/ski-out living through its seamless access to the exterior. A bridge that also serves as the home’s primary exterior entertaining space allows occupants to fully experience the immediate recreational draws of the surrounding area throughout all seasons. The chalet is at once a comfortable “basecamp” for outdoor adventures and a refined entertaining hub for all who visit.
