The Upper Meadow Residence was designed as a “retreat” for a couple from Chicago and their three children in 1979. They first occupied their home in 1981, and they continue to enjoy this retreat through multiple generations. Two particular ideas were established that profoundly impacted the final design - circular forms and shapes that respected the site’s natural ele- ments, and energy efficiency . The use of a metal roof and wood siding brings the home into the context of Jackson Hole. The home, for the most part, is one room deep, stretched out along an east/west axis to capture as much sun as possible and allow for the spectacular views to the north. This home was de- signed to look toward the future, creating a structure that is enduring in how it functions and embraces its locality. This home was truly ahead of its time with respect to focusing on sustainable design.
