The firm has completed $2.3 billion of transformational work, in close collabora- tion with cities and not-for-profits. Mr. Rose is a thought leader in a wide range of urban issues, and the development of commu- nities of opportunity. Mr. Rose’s book on how to create resilient cities, The Well-Tem- pered City: What Modern Science, Ancient Civilizations and Human Nature Teach Us About the Future of Urban Life, won the 2017 PROSE Award for Outstanding Scholarly Work by a Trade Publisher. Mr. Rose and his wife Diana Calthorpe Rose are the co-founders of the Garrison Institute, an organization that connects inner trans- formation with outer solutions to relieve suffering in the fields of trauma, education and the environment. Tuesday afternoon sessions were regarding Regional/Urban Design Assistance Teams and a session choice of project transformations around the country. Followed by a choice of concurrent sessions pertaining to “Develop- ing as a Leader,” specifically on community leadership or firm leadership. On Tuesday evening, several WMR attendees met at a local pizza joint for comradery and story swapping. The final day of the conference began with Topical Breakfasts led by AIA Strategic Council. Attendees chose between Transformation of Architectural Education, Aging Boomer Architects, Virtual Reality, Innovative Business Models, City Architect Initiative, Targeted Public Awareness of Archi- tects’ Contributions, Changes to Society, Pro- fessional Development, Membership Aware- ness & Collaboration, or Practice Trends. Meanwhile, Susan attended a CACE breakfast meeting. Then, the conference continued with a general session of a Mayors Panel: Leading as Influencers. The panelists included Sharon Weston Broome, Mayor of Baton Rouge, LA, Tom Tait, Mayor of Anaheim, CA and Charles Travis, FAIA, Former Mayor of Cornelius, NC. The remainder of the morning was the work- shop, “Developing as a Leader”, followed by the networking lunch led by AIA Trust, Arm- strong World Industries Foundation speaker, Jennifer Johnson. The closing general session provided a My AIA Story on Community Outreach: Recovering from Disasters with presentations by Derek Webb, AIA Houston, Janis Bracket, AIA, AIA Strategic Council, Jana Itzen, AIA, AIA Cal- ifornia Council and Illya Azaroff, AIA, AIA Strategic Council. The keynote was William Taylor, Founding Editor, Fast Company and Best-Selling Author. William C. Taylor is an agenda-setting writer, speaker and entrepreneur who chronicles the best ways to compete, in- novate and succeed. His new book Simply Brilliant: How Great Organizations Do Or- dinary Things in Extraordinary Ways, offers a set of messages and a collection of case studies about how to unleash breakthrough creativity and cutting-edge performance in even the most familiar, slow-to-change fields. Simply Brilliant is a sequel of sorts to Mr. Taylor’s most recent book, Practically Radical: Not-So-Crazy Ways to Transform Your Company, Shake Up Your Industry, and Challenge Yourself, which was published in January 2011. As co-founder and founding editor of Fast Company, he launched a mag- azine that won countless awards, earned a passionate following among executives and entrepreneurs around the world, and became a legendary business success. In less than six years, an enterprise that took shape in some borrowed office space in Harvard Square sold for $340 million. Fast Company has won just about every award there is to win in the magazine world. In recognition of Fast Company’s impact on business, Mr. Taylor was named Champion of Workplace Learning and Performance by the American Society of Training and Development. He has published numerous essays and CEO interviews in the Harvard Business Review, and his column Under New Management ran in the Sunday business section of The New York Times.
