18 WYOMING ARCHITECTURE .18 | www.aia-wyoming.org AIA Western Mountain Region Conference 2018 The 2018 AIA Western Mountain Region Conference will address the new methods and practices that are changing the way we work HERE + NOW! A IA Arizona hosted the 2018 Western Mountain Region Conference in Tucson at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, October 3rd-6th. Here + Now: seeking engagements to spark the interests of all members, throughout the region, they fashioned the event around a true architectural provocateur, Reed Kroloff, who both provided the initial keynote and interviewed the other principal speak- ers. Topics range though form of practice, of business, of technology, of making and of cities, with each being explored via panel discussions with extended participants. The conference committee was chaired by Mark Ryan, AIA with assistance from Rob Miller, AIA, AIA AZ Presi- dent and other committee members. There were three pre-conference workshops available for additional training, education, and credits held on Wednesday. The workshops consisted of a Disaster Assistance Training and a Practice Innova- tion Lab. Following the pre-conference workshops was the WMR Business Meet- ing. Katie Wilson, AIA, WMR Senior Director and Nate Hudson, AIA, Junior Director led the meeting. AIA Wyoming members in attendance at this meeting included Lewis Matthew Miller, AIA, Senator Stephan Pappas, AIA, Clint Taylor, AIA, and Susan Menghini, Executive Direc- tor. The agenda included the written reports, review of the 2019 budget, election of officers, the Jason Pettigrew Scholarship, AIA National and Strategic Council updates. AIA Wyoming was provided time to promote the 2019 WMR Conference that will be held in Jackson, WY. The only contested election was the Regional Director position. Dino Sakellar, AIA was elected. All other positions will remain the same. AIA Arizona hosted a welcome party on Wednesday evening at the Coyote Corral with hamburgers, hot dogs and live entertainment. Thursday began with Katie and Nate welcoming everyone to the event. Carl Elefante, FAIA, AIA President presented his message to the region. Throughout the conference the Lessons Learned: The Program videos were shared. The Lessons Learned: The Program showcased short films from recognized peers on notable projects and they came to be, from the prospective the whole design and construction team working together. Several tracks to choose from were presented Thursday afternoon. These sessions included topics on Diversity/Equality/Inclusion, Alternative Practice, Practice Transformation in Response to Climate Change, Perspective and the Technologies of Engagement, Soulful Constructs, Active Matter and the Craft of Stewardship, ending the combined dis- cussion by Reed Kroloff, Dwayne Oyler and Jenny Wu.
