18 WYOMING ARCHITECTURE .19 | www.aia-wyoming.org AIA Conference on Architecture 2019 BY LEWIS MATTHEW MILLER , AIA T he AIA National Conference on Architecture 2019 was held in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Las Vegas convention center from June 6th to the 8th with pre-conference activities on June 5th. The AIA National Conference of Architecture, Las Vegas, provided a great location for the western states to easily gather with broader AIA community and share their architectural stories. The national conference provides the opportunity for governance, education, tours, and a trade show for the AIA community. Attending as a delegate for the member- ship of the AIAWyoming brought a new awareness of connection and appreciation for the AIA and the broader architectural community. The AIA Visionary speakers’ lineup included Academy Award-winning co-writer and director Ryan Coogler, founder & CEO Reshma Sauja- ni, and host Roman Mars were amongst dozens of inspiring speakers. There are summaries of the speakers’ talks and links to more content from speakers on the AIA.org site. Presentations were followed by questions and discussions amongst the AIA attendees, which adds a level of engagement and interaction that is missing from only watching recorded versions of the presentations. Professional development is a big part of AIA to include the national convention, which is why the mix of watching and, more importantly, participating is a key benefit for attendees. The AIA National Conference on Architecture brings with it many opportunities to tour local architecture and cultural venues, includ- ing striking national sites to visit. Amongst the most striking was the Grand Canyon Skywalk which is both a unique piece of architecture and a world-class destination on many people’s bucket lists. Another great blend of nature and architecture was a tour of the Red Rock Can- yon National Conservation area, which lies in Nevada’s Mojave Desert. The perfectly sited facilities from the team of architects at Line and Space, LLC, was a highlight for many who toured the Visitors Center with Henry Tom, FAIA. The COTE Top Ten measures, grassroots efforts, with facilitation from AIA Board, contributed to the “AIA Resolution for Urgent and Sustained Climate Action,” passing with a 93% vote. The resolution includes three majors AIA actions: 1) Declare an urgent climate im- perative for carbon reduction; 2) Transform the day-to-day practice of architects to achieve a zero-carbon, equitable, resilient and healthy built environment; and 3) Leverage support of our peers, clients, policymak- ers, and the public at large. The results of the elections held at the AIA National Conference in- clude: Peter Exley, FAIA as the 2020 First Vice President and 2021 Pres- ident-elect, Evelyn Lee, AIA as the 2020-2021 Treasurer, and Britt Lind- berg as the 2020-2022 At Large Director. AIA Wyoming representation included Lewis Matthew Miller, AIA, AIA Wyoming President-Elect, who attended the presentations and discussions with the candidates along with providing the AIA Wyoming vote as an accredited delegate. The American Institute of Architects elevated 115 architects to its pres- tigious College of Fellows. This honor is awarded to members who have made significant contributions to the architecture profession. These 115 fellows were honored at their investiture ceremony held at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts as part of the 2019 AIA Conference on Architecture in Las Vegas.
