30 WYOMING ARCHITECTURE .19 | www.aia-wyoming.org AIA WY Spring Conference: Emergent BY SUSAN MENGHINI, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR T he AIA Wyoming Spring Conference was hosted in Cheyenne, Wyoming April 4-6, 2019, at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. The theme of the conference was EMERGent – “Each AIA Wyoming gathering brings irreducible connection and reflection on what aspects of our architectural profession have gained new prominence. We are taking special care to appreciate the emergent collective that represents AIA Wyoming and to contemplate on our shared architectural affinities, which give us a sense of belonging, as well as to emergent ideas, emerging profes- sionals, and collaborations yet to emerge.”The conference planning team brought a collection of speakers on this theme to Cheyenne for this event that brought 15 continuing education credits to licensed professionals. The event began onThursday afternoon with four pre-conference work- shops held at the Laramie County Library. The first workshop, presented by DavidMills of Epic Metals, was on the topic of acoustics. David is a long-time supporter of AIA and the State Chapter AIAWyoming. The second workshop, Implementing Structural and Foundation Repairs Using Expanding Structural Polymers, was presented by Robert van der Hoeven, P.E. of Concrete Stabilization Technologies. The third workshop, presented by BrianMackey of Powers Products, was Successful Workplace Design: En- gaging a Multi-Generational Workforce. The final pre-conference workshop was presented by Carey Hartmann of the Laramie County Library, followed by a tour of the library. Attendees gathered at the Orangerie and Gathering Rooms at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens for sessions all day on Friday, April 5th. Clint Taylor, AIA, AIAWY President welcomed the attendees and guests for a cross section of speakers. Jared “Cappie” Capp of Pangea Design Group from Spearfish, SD started the day with “some things in design and construction cannot be compromised such as quality engineering and client focus. However, there is a lot of room to be creative regarding local, natural, and recycled materials in a project’s design and build.
