35 co-founder of De Leon and Primmer Archi- tecture Workshop (DPAW), a collaborative design studio recognized for work that draws inspiration from regional traditions of craft, fabrication and building, placing an emphasis on the potential of conventional materials and construction methods. Through an immersive process of research & investigation, the studio cultivates an understanding of contextual specificity as a thoughtful relationship between place, time and local culture. In implementing this approach, DPAW purposefully embraces a rigor of simplicity and precision, with the underlying premise that innovation necessarily equals economy. This lecture will focus on a selection of the firm’s current range of work, specifically highlighting the design approaches and explorations unique to each project, as well as offer an insight into DPAW’s studio culture. Friday evening, AIA Wyoming hosted the WMR Design and Honor Awards program that also included the celebration of the WMR 60th Anniversary with a slideshow. This year’s Design awards jury included John Grable, FAIA, Roberto de Leon, FAIA, Tom Kundig, FAIA. The Honor Awards jury included Mike Wisneski, AIA, Peggy McDonough, AIA, and Dwayne Eshenbaugh, AIA. Presenting the De- sign Awards was the jury chair John Grable, FAIA, and Roberto de Leon, FAIA. There were 15 design award winners, all “built” projects. Two were awarded to AIA Wyoming mem- bers. Dwayne Eshenbaugh, AIA presented the WMR Honor Awards. The WMR Regional Di- rectors Nate Hudson, AIA and Dino Sakellar, FAIA ended the evening by celebrating with the participants the 60 years of the Western Mountain Region with some history about the region. The NCARB Board of Directors was invited by AIA Wyoming to join us in this cel- ebration. Many of the NCARB Board and it’s CEO, Michael Armstrong were in attendance. The conference wrapped up on Saturday morning with a session by Harry Falconer, NCARB, FAIA. He discussed the ethics in daily life…you live it though you might not recognize it. It is your ethical responsibility as an architect, supervising licensure candi- dates to guide their development and prepare them for practice. The session focused on the knowledge, skills, and tasks that an archi- tect and their teams need to know to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public through the competent practice of architec- ture. Errors cost time and money; knowledge saves time and increases profit. Ethics, con- duct, and competence underwrite the success of your practice. Following the NCARB session was a drive out to Jackson Lake Lodge in Grand Teton National Park for a tour of the building by Cornelius Kinsey, AIA and Betsy Engle as fol- low up to the PBS documentary “Architecture in the Tetons” shown the previous day. The Architectural Education Foundation held a golf tournament after the conference on Saturday afternoon at Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis for an opportunity for fun while increasing the funds for the scholarships of Wyoming students. Two person teams repre- senting each state were assembled with AIA Wyoming taking home the trophy. We appreciate the time and effort that our conference planning team put into this event while enjoying hosting those from the six states; including Lewis Matthew Miller, AIA, Clint Taylor, AIA, Rachel Delventhal, AIA, Carl Kohut, AIA, Suzanne Norton, AIA, Katie Wilson, AIA, Bonnie Chambers, AIA, Tim Schenk, AIA, Brandon Daigle, AIA, Colleen Nelson, AIA, Mike Potter, AIA, Dino Sakellar, FAIA, Patrice Kangas, Hunter Singleton, and Susan Menghini, Executive Director. The 2020 Western Mountain Region Confer- ence will be hosted by AIA New Mexico and AIA Albuquerque in Albuquerque themed “Vision 2020”, September 30th through Octo- ber 3rd, 2020. b
